১৯৭১ সালের ২৮ জানুয়ারি, লন্ডনের রয়্যাল ফেস্টিভাল হলে একটি historic সন্ধ্যা উপস্থিত হয়েছিল। ভারতীয় সেতারবাদক রবি শঙ্কর তাঁর নিজের রচিত 'সেতার কনচের্তো নং ১' প্রথমবারের মতো পরিবেশন করতে যাচ্ছিলেন। এই venture ছিল পশ্চিমা অর্কেস্ট্রা ও ভারতীয় শাস্ত্রীয় সংগীতের মধ্যে এক unprecedented^C1 সংযোগ। লন্ডন সিম্ফনি অর্কেস্ট্রা এবং প্রখ্যাত conductor আন্দ্রে প্রেভিনের সঙ্গে শঙ্করের এই collaboration সংগীতজগতে এক নতুন দিগন্ত উন্মোচন করে।

রবি শঙ্কর ১৯২০ সালে বারাণসীতে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি প্রথমে পশ্চিমা সংগীতের প্রতি inclined ছিলেন, কিন্তু পরে সেতারে dedicated হন এবং ভারতীয় শাস্ত্রীয় সংগীতের এক prominent ব্যক্তিত্বে পরিণত হন।
