১৯২১ সালের ১ জুলাই ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়, যা পূর্ববঙ্গের শিক্ষার প্রসারে যুগান্তকারী ভূমিকা রাখে।

১৯২১ সালের ১ জুলাই, ব্রিটিশ ভারতের ঢাকা শহরে একটি significant^B2 (তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ) ঘটনা ঘটে। এই দিনে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে establish (প্রতিষ্ঠা) হয়। এটি ছিল পূর্ববঙ্গের প্রথম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। এর origin (উৎপত্তি) সম্পর্কে বলা যায়, ১৯১১ সালে বঙ্গভঙ্গ রদ হওয়ার পর মুসলিম জনগণের শিক্ষার উন্নতির জন্য এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপনের দাবি ওঠে। ১৯১২ সালে হান্টার কমিশন ঢাকায় একটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপনের সুপারিশ করে। এরপর ১৯২০ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আইন পাস হয়। ১৯২১ সালের ১ জুলাই নবাব স্যার সলিমুল্লাহ, স্যার এ. কে. ফজলুল হক এবং অন্যান্য নেতাদের প্রচেষ্টায় এটি implement (বাস্তবায়ন) হয়। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম উপাচার্য ছিলেন ড. ফিলিপ হার্টগ। শুরুতে এখানে ৩টি অনুষদ, ১২টি বিভাগ এবং ৮৭৭ জন শিক্ষার্থী ছিল।
