২৯ মে ১৯৫৩ সালের সকাল। নেপালের সোলোখুম্বু অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত বিশ্বের সর্বোচ্চ শৃঙ্গ মাউন্ট এভারেস্টের দক্ষিণ কলের উপর দুজন পর্বতারোহী অবস্থান করছেন। তারা হলেন নিউজিল্যান্ডের এডমন্ড হিলারি এবং নেপালের তেনজিং নোরগে। তাদের এই expedition (অভিযান) শুরু হয়েছিল প্রায় দুই মাস আগে, যখন তারা ব্রিটিশ পর্বতারোহী দলের অংশ হিসেবেbase camp থেকে যাত্রা শুরু করেন।

দলটি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে perseverance (অধ্যবসায়) সহকারে বিভিন্ন ক্যাম্প স্থাপন করে ধীরে ধীরে উচ্চতা অর্জন করে। তারা altitude (উচ্চতা) জনিত সমস্যা, প্রচণ্ড ঠান্ডা এবং কম অক্সিজেন মাত্রার সাথে confront (মোকাবিলা) করেন। ২৮ মে তারা শেষ ক্যাম্প থেকে উঠে আসেন এবং পরদিন ভোরে summiting-এর জন্য প্রস্তুত হন।

সেদিন সকালে আবহাওয়া ছিল তুলনামূলকভাবে favorable (অনুকূল)।
